Installation

Installed like infrastructure. Not fitted like a gadget.

Every Kilo system is engineered before it is ordered, built by Kilo contractors and tested string by string against the standards that govern commercial electrical work. Nothing is switched on until it passes.

Built to

  • BS 7671:2018+A4:2026
  • ENA G99 Issue 2
  • ENA G100
  • IET Code of Practice for EESS, 3rd edition
  • RC62 fire safety with PV
  • BS EN 62446-1
  • IEC TS 62446-3
  • BRE Digest 489
  • CDM 2015
  • Work at Height Regulations 2005
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012

Kilo contractors

An engineering team, not a list of subcontractors. Vetted, trained on one system and held to one checklist.

Vetted before they touch a roof

Kilo contractors are commercial electrical and roofing teams we assess ourselves: accreditation, insurance, references, and a first install supervised by a Kilo engineer.

Trained on our kit, our way

One panel, one inverter family, one battery range, one method statement. Crews fit the same system every time, so the hundredth install is as tight as the first.

Signed off at every gate

Each gate has a checklist in the Kilo app with photos and test results. A Kilo engineer signs it before the job moves on. No signature, no next step.

Seven gates

Nothing moves on until the last gate is signed. Every job, in this order.

How the whole journey works
  1. Week one

    Gate 1: Survey

We measure the site before we draw anything. The survey decides the design, so it is the longest visit we make before the build.

    • Roof build-up, condition, covering and fragile areas recorded
    • Asbestos register checked; a refurbishment survey ordered if the roof could contain it
    • Main board, earthing, spare capacity and meter position tested
    • Half-hourly data matched to how the site actually runs
    • Battery location, access, ventilation and fire separation measured

    Signed off byKilo engineer

  2. Week two

    Gate 2: Engineering design

Two independent sign-offs before anything is ordered: one for the roof, one for the electrics.

    • Structural calculation for the added load and wind uplift, to BS EN 1991-1-4 and BRE Digest 489
    • Electrical design to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, including the new battery requirements
    • Array laid out to RC62: clear of fire walls, with access routes for the fire service
    • Battery sited and protected to the IET Code of Practice for energy storage
    • String-by-string yield model, so every panel earns its place

Signed off byChartered structural engineer and Kilo design

  3. Before we mobilise

    Gate 3: Approvals

The paperwork other installers leave to the customer. We handle every application and give you the dates.

    • G99 application to your network operator, and approval before connection
    • Export limitation designed to G100 where the network needs it
    • Planning checked: rooftop permitted development, prior approval where required
    • Your insurer sent the fire design so cover is confirmed before the build
    • CDM 2015 duties assigned and a construction phase plan written

    Signed off byKilo

  4. Week before install

    Gate 4: Mobilisation

Every person on your roof knows the plan, the risks and your opening hours before day one.

    • Site-specific risk assessments and method statements, briefed to the whole crew
    • Edge protection, scaffold and access designed for the roof, not borrowed from the last job
    • Fragile roof areas marked and protected
    • Deliveries, crane lifts and noisy work scheduled around your business
    • One named Kilo engineer as your contact from start to finish

Signed off byKilo contractor, Kilo engineer

  5. Install

    Gate 5: Build

Hidden work is photographed before it is covered, so nothing we sign off is taken on trust.

    • Work at height planned to avoid, then prevent, then minimise any fall
    • Fixings pull-tested on flat roofs and torqued to the manufacturer’s figure
    • DC connectors matched by make and crimped with the maker’s own tool
    • Cable routes protected, labelled and fire-stopped where they pass through the building
    • Photo record at every stage, uploaded to the job in the Kilo app

    Signed off byKilo contractor

  6. Before switch-on

    Gate 6: Test and commission

Nothing is energised until it passes. Every string is tested and every result is written down.

    • String tests to BS EN 62446-1: polarity, voltage, current and insulation resistance
    • Electrical Installation Certificate issued under BS 7671
    • Protection settings checked against the G99 approval, and witness testing where the network asks
    • Battery commissioned to the IET Code of Practice and its emergency stop proven
    • Kilo OS connected, controlling and reading every half hour

    Signed off byKilo engineer

  7. Switch-on and first 30 days

Gate 7: Prove and hand over

We prove the system under load, then watch it against your business case before we call the job closed.

    • Thermal imaging of the array under load, to IEC TS 62446-3
    • Handover pack: as-built drawings, test results, certificates and warranties
    • Fire service drawings and isolation points left on site
    • Your team shown the app, the isolators and what to do if an alarm sounds
    • First 30 days of output checked against the design, string by string

    Signed off byKilo

Questions

Installation, answered. Roofs, asbestos, insurers and planning.

Installation

Who actually installs my system?

Kilo contractors: commercial electrical and roofing teams Kilo has assessed and trained on our kit and method. A named Kilo engineer runs your job, signs off every gate and is your single contact. Kilo holds the contract, the price and the warranty.

Is my roof strong enough?

We do not guess. A chartered structural engineer checks the roof for the added weight and wind uplift before anything is ordered. If the roof needs work, or is not suitable, you hear it at the design stage, before you have spent anything on the build.

What if my building has asbestos?

Many older commercial roofs do. We check your asbestos register at the survey and, where the work could disturb the roof fabric, arrange a refurbishment survey by a competent surveyor before any work starts, as the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require.

Will my insurer be happy?

We design the array to RC62, the fire safety recommendations insurers use for solar on commercial buildings, and send your insurer the design before the build so cover is confirmed first.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not. Rooftop solar on most commercial buildings in England is permitted development, with no size cap since December 2023. Larger systems need prior approval from the council, and listed buildings need full consent. We check and apply for you.

Is it MCS certified?

MCS covers solar up to 50 kWp and batteries up to 50 kW, so it applies to our smaller systems. Most business systems are larger, and are designed and certified to BS 7671, G99, the IET Code of Practice and RC62, which is what the network operator and your insurer require.

How much disruption is there?

Most of the work happens on the roof. Deliveries, lifts and the short shutdown to connect the system are planned around your opening hours, agreed with you in advance.
